American Football: Interception

This sequence of frames was made on October 27, 2011, at Jurupa Valley High School in Southern California. The JVHS Freshman team, overseen by coaches Saugstad, Hopper, and Rodriguez, wears the blue jerseys. The opposing team, wearing the red and white uniforms, is the Freshman team from Norte Vista High School.

I used the Nikon D200 and Nikon 18-105mm VR lens. With that equipment I typically shoot in Aperture Priority mode and set the smallest aperture that returns a fast shutter speed. The smaller apertures give a deeper depth of field for better overall focus, and the fast shutter speed (at least 1/100th of a second) minimizes motion blurring.

This forward pass, made by the Norte Vista Braves’ quarterback, was intended to land in the hands of number 27. Instead, it was intercepted by the Jurupa Valley Jaguar’s number 20, who ran the ball over twenty yards after taking it away from the Braves.
