Elephant Seals

Northern Elephant Seals (Mirounga angustirostris), spend eight to ten months in the open ocean and can dive down to 5,000 feet. They return twice a year to the Piedras Blancas Rookery on US Highway 1, seven miles north of San Simeon, California.

The Piedras Blancas Rookery is used by the approximately 15,000 seals for breeding, birthing, molting and rest. The seals in these photos are primarily juvenile males.
